TMLE — The Modern Language Experiment

About The Modern Language Experiment

The organisation

Artist-led since 2007

The Modern Language Experiment, established in 2007 by Matthew Stock, Keh Ng and Tina Hage, is an artist-led contemporary art project based in London, UK and Munich, Germany.

It is engaged in the development, discussion, contemplation and execution of the changing language of art today, which manifests as exhibitions, collaborations, talks, seminars and screenings.

TMLE is a collaborative artist project that focuses on alternative modes of artistic production and, through this process, aims to enable new ways of spectatorship and engagement with contemporary art. This ongoing conversation is focused on encouraging new forms of discourse and learning. We continue to work with independent artist-run spaces, art institutions and universities in the United Kingdom and internationally.

The series

What is an Art Book?

What is an Art Book? is a continuing collaborative publication series. For each volume, a large group of artists, writers, curators and other practitioners is invited to respond to the title with their own interpretation of what an art book means to them and their practice.

One rule holds the series together: every contribution must be realisable on A4 paper in black and white. That constraint makes the book cheap to produce, quick to assemble in the room, and equal for everyone in it — a photograph, a text, a score and a drawing all arrive at the same size and in the same ink.

Each volume is made over a few days in a working space that doubles as exhibition, production house and place of discourse. Every contributor receives a copy, and the finished book is donated to public collections.
